DEEDS THAT WON REWARDS

(FBOU OUR OWN COBRESPONDENT.) LONDON, 20th August. Some months ago, Lieutenant-Colonel J. N. Carroll, D.5.0., N.Z.M.R., was awarded a bar to the D.S.O. Details now given tell that he carried out an attack with great skill on the flank .of the enemy's position, and when heavily countcr-attycked he showed splendid ability in 'meeting the enemy's attack, altering his dispositions several times to meet the changed circumstances and driving back the enemy with heavy loss. Captain W. H. P. MacKenzie, M.C., Yeomanry (Dhnedin), in command of a patrol of two cars, displayed fine leadership and great gallantry during a journey which his patrol made right through enemy country. In the course of this journey he was attacked ou two occasions, but succeeded in gaining much valuable information, and received a bar to his M.C. ■ Captain W. S. Mieville, London Regt., gained his Military Cross for walking forward across the open to one of the advanced Companies when ordered to support a counter-attack. He went under machine-gun fire and obtained information of the utmost value, his coolness and gallantry being a splendid example to everyone. Lieutenant William R. Foley; N.Z.M.R., was attacked by a superior force when in charge of a squadron on outpost duty, but he held his position under heavy shell and rifle fire until ordered to retire.
