MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr.-F. V Frazer, S.M., presided at tlie Magistrate's Court this morning, when a number of cases were dealt with. Four first-offending inebriates were dealt with in the usual • manner. Two were women, and a prohibition order was issued against one of them at her own request. Thomas Francis Coyne, for a second offence of drunkenness, was convicted and fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. George Bowden, on a charge of drunkenness, was convicted and discharged, and for a breach of his prohibition order he was fined £1. Four charges of having done wilful damage to ladies' costumes and overcoats by throwing-indelible ink on them in the streets, were preferred against JohnM'Cook. It was explained by Acting Sub-Inspector Emerson that other complaints of a similar nature were being investigated, and a remand until 15th October was granted. Roderick M'Leod Beard was charged with having unlawfully boarded a vessel at the Queen's Wharf. His explanation was that he was looking for a job, and had been told to come ba,ck. However, Beard refused to quit the ship when he returned to it in a semi-drunken state, and for this he was convicted and fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. An elderly man named Daniel Murphy was charged with having, on 24th September, stolen a pair of men's boots, valued at 26s 6d, the property of Lindsay's, Ltd., Lambton-quay. The defence was one of mistaken identity, and the Magistrate held that the evidence was not sufficient to warrant the conviction of the accused, who was accord: ingly discharged. (Proceeding.) At the Petone Magistrate's Court this morning, before Messrs. Jones and Kerr, J.P.s, D. M'Callum was charged with carnally knowing a child under 16 years of age. He was remanded for ■ eight days, bail being fixed at himself £100 and two' sureties of £100 each. A man who had not previously been before the Court was charged with stealing from the Gear Company seven legs of frozen mutton, value £1 Us -6d. He pleaded guilty, and said that he was going into camp next Wednesday. Mr. W. G. Lodder,. manager of the freezing depart-' ment, said the man was receiving £4 a week as a fireman. The company had considerable trouble in detecting thieving, and the works were nothing but a hotbed for stealing. Recently a bag of meat had been found in Kelly's-lane. It was very hard to catch the culprits. The Bench inflicted a fine oi £10, in default one month's imprisonment. By consent, prohibition orders were granted against I Clara Ellicock, William C. Daniels, I and Elizabeth J. Daniels.
