SIONS
The racing fixtures in the Wellington district for tho Christmas holidays aro tho Manawatu Kacing Club's Meeting at Awapuni and tho South Wairarapa Trotting Club's Meeting at Claroville. A special Boxing Day athletic sports meeting is to be held on the Basin Ueserve, when New Zealand's champion cylists—Frank Grose (Christchurch), Tom Oakley (Masterton), Milton Gane (Wellington), and Cyril Flett (Wellington)— will be seen in . action; Miss V. Barron (Foxton), Miss C. Miller (Wellington), and Miss Hoylo (Napier) will compete in special ladies' events; special Highland dancing competitions are to be held; tho whippets will take part in flat and hurdle races; and Charlie Jenkins will be matched with .Tack Elliott. Broadsiding at its best will bo seen at the Kilbirnio Stadium on Boxing Day, when Wally Kilmistor and the champion Australian cinder-shifters— Lionel Van Praag, Charlie Spinks, Arthur Mann, and Syd Perkins—will again demonstrate their powers. Tho Miramar Golf Club's New Year tournament will be held on Ist, 2nd, and 3rd January, 1930. The programme comprises tho Miramar open amateur championship, over 18 holes, final, over 30 holes; tho Miramar groups handicap ovc-r IS holes; bogey handicaps, first and second days, over 18 holes, and tho four-ball handicap, last day, over IS holes. Entries close to-morrow. Tho Island Bay Beach Gala is to be hold from 20th December to 4th January, inclusive. Thero will be sideshows to suit a wido variety of tastes, and Surf Club displays. A special children's day will be announced later.
Petone's Beach Carnival opens on Boxing Day, and closes on Saturday, 4th January. It is claimed that it will be tho greatest carnival yet held at Petone. Tho attractions include all tho latest side-shows, including as a special attraction Captain M'Farlane's performing dogs and monkeys.
The Adelphi Cabaret announces a Christmas Eve carnival, with dancing from 8.30 p.m., and afternoon and evening sessions on Boxing Day.
An excursion to Picton and Blenheim will be run by tho turbine steamer Maori on Boxing Day.
Limited bus and tramway services for Christmas Day are announced by tho Tramways Department; and tho Railway Department also announces epoeial train arrangements and additional bus services for tho Christmas and New Year holidays.
• The City Council offices will close for the holidays at noon to-morrow, and will vcopeu on Friday, 3rd January, but in order to meet the convenience of tho public, the rates and engineers' offices will be opened froni 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday next. The libraries will be closed on Christmas and Boxing Days and on Ist and 2nd January. All the baths will be closed on Christmas Day, and likewise the Berhamporo golf links.
