INSTITUTE'S MODERATE SCORE.

Institute and University had the use of No. 1 wicket on the Basin Reserve, and the end of the day's play saw the Students in a good position, although they lost their first two wickets cheaply. With Foley on the injured list, aud Dempster's finger still sore, Institute were far from being at their full batting strength, and but for a good score by Massey their total would have been poor indeed. Banks and Burt were the opening pair, but they fared badly before the bowling of Macallan, a newcomer from Auckland, and. Leys. Two wickets were down for 11 runs when Massey and Bilby became associated, and they improved the score by just oVer 50 runs. The pair scored slowly for a start, by eventually fell through snicking a ball but eventually fell through snicking a ball from Aim, but Prince, who followed, helped Massey carry the score along at a good rate. With four wickets down for 148, Institute looked likely to put on a good score, but Dempster fell lbw to Bagge before he had reached the twenties, and the tail-end batsmen could make little impression on the bowling. Massey, who was clean bowled by Macallan with 82 opposite his name, was easily the top scorer, and his innings was invaluable to his side. but otherwise he gave no chances and put on his runs by sound batting. The wickets were shared mainly between Macallan and Leys, with Aim and Bagge also lending assistance. The fielding was not faultless, but on the whole was sound. Institute were all out at about ten minutes to 6, and University commenced their innings just after 6 o'clock.-. The start was disastrous,. Bailey being bowled by Henderson before a run had been scored, and Dormer with the score at 12. Mackenzie and Osborn played out time. Details:— ' INSTITUTE. First Innings.
