MAN DROWNED

AUCKLAND, 22nd December.
John Massey Gardiner, aged 50, married, with five young children, residing at Te Papapa, was drowned in the upper reaches of Manukau Harbour on Saturday afternoon. Gardiner was fishing from a dinghy with a net when he appeared to overbalance, and became entangled in the net. He called for help, and three men on shore swam out to his assistance, one getting very close to Gardiner before he disappeared. Diving was carried out in an effort to locate the body, without success.
