HEAVY RAINS
CANTERBURY SOAKED
CRICKET MATCH POSTPONED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
CHRISTCIIUBCn, This Day. Heavy rain set in from the southuvst ycsteiJay, and yestcrti: y after, noon the downpour was the heaviest experienced in Canterbury for some considerable time. The storm-waters caused Blight flooding in several places in the city, and Wirth's were compelled to abandon their night performance becauso of the sodden condition of the section in Moorhouse avenue, where their circus is located, and the danger to the public and performers of the big sodden tent collapsing. The Opperman cycling carnival was also postponed.
Tho wind was very boisterous at times, and there was no sign of any abatement in the conditions lato tonight.
There is practically no hope of the cricket match M.C.C. versus Canterbury being commenced to-day, and endeavours are being made to put the South Canterbury match back a day in order to enable the match with Canterbury to be continued on Friday. Reports from the country districts show that the rain is heavy and general throughout the province. ■ While the gale was at its height a five-seater motor-car driven by tho Mayor, the Rev. J. K. Archer, and containing also tho Mayoress and Mrs. Green,, a member of the Hospital Board' was struck by a moving tram in Cathedral Square, a wheel being doubled up and the axle bent. Tho occupants were uninjured. The car had to be towed to a garage. The weather is now clearing.
