The crowd, which had increased from 4000 to 15,000, then saw an exciting1 collapse, Scaly, Constantine, and Bartleet going for nine runs. Barrow joined Martin, who had batted throughout.-■ • The pair opened out, and when Martin hit the ball, which was dropped in a scramble of three over-eager fieldsmen, ran two and brought the score up to 350. Grant then declared bo as to get Australia in on a troublesome wicket. Martin's score included eleven 4's, and his innings- lasted 347 minutes. Australia was early in trouble, the bowlers profiting by Ironmonger's- discovery of a patch from which. the ball rose da,ngcrously. Ponsford's dismissal heartened the visitors, but Bradmau's association with his skipper brought the total along nicely. Both had a lucky let-off. Bradman hit out merrily till the crowd was thrilled by a smart catch by which Francis cut • his career short.
