AUCKLAND SPECIAL.
[Special to Times. | Auckland, Wednesday.
Visitors from all parts of the colony were present at the Sylvia Park sale of Nathan’s yearlings. Several Gisbornites were present, but did not indulge in speculation. Amongst tho Gisborne people present I noticed Messrs Maynard, F. Lysnar, McHugh, Burns, Oman and others.
There was a record attendance to witness the [Derby on Wednesday.. The defeat of the favorite, St. Michael, in the A.lt.C. Handicap, at the hands of Nonette came as a surprise. At the commencement of the same race, coining around the bend, Materoa almost came to grief, she being bumped by Formula and others. Luckily the Gisborne mare escaped and continued in the race.
The racehorse Mary Seaton has been sold to a Waihi hairdresser for 12ogs. Auckland, last night.
A largo number of Gisborne people were present at the races to-day, including Messrs Dean Pitt, Buckland, W. Miller, Lysnar, Staff, A. Eees, Mann, Hogan, Howard, and Maynard.
In the Handicap yesterday, Materoa broke a blood-vessel. She ran to-day, and gave a poor exhibition. Tauhei was kicked on tho shoulder by Sparkling Water at tho commencement of tho Grandstand Handicap. I regret to state that Mr Harding’s grey mare is now lame. Eeady did not ride Tauhei to-day. At the conclusion of the Grandstand Handicap to-day, Mr Stead’s horse St. Michael and its rider wore loudly hooted by the crowd. The local horse Nonette ran a game race, and suffered defeat at the hands of St. Michael. St. Michael ran a very poor race yesterday, and to-day was an easy winner, hence the anger of the crowd.
