CHESS TOURNAMENT.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. The last round of the Chess Championship was played to-day, though the championship was decided on the previous day, when Barnes won his fifth game. The play was interesting not%vithstanding, as there was every prospect of a hard struggle for second place, and so it turned out. Forsyth won his game from Jowitt in the morning, and Miles secured a draw with Barnes, of Wellington, after a long and patient, close game. Miles was heartily congratulated on the conclusion of the game, as the draw gave him a tie with Forsyth for second place. In the tournament the scores were as follows : B. J. Barnes, Wellington Working Men’s Chess Club, 51 wins ; E. J. Miles, Auckland Chess Club, 4 ; D. Forsyth, Otago Chess Club, 4 ; J. .Jaquet, Auckland Chess Club, 3 ; J. C. Grierson, Auckland Chess Club, 2.j ; J. Edwards, Otago Chess Club, 2 ; A. Jowitt, Auckland Chess Club, 0. Barnes takes the Championship, and first prize of £2O. Miles and Forsyth, who tied for second place, divide second and third prizes according to the rules, receiving £7 loa each,
