MAN SHOOTS HIS WIFE. ALSO SHOOTS PURSUING POLICEMAN. By Telegraph —Pres, Association—Copyright Sydney, Jan. 9. A tragedy has taken place at Maclean. James Dowling, living apart from his wife, gained admittance to her room, and S shot her, inflicting throe serious wounds. Pie escaped for a time. The police pursued him. Dowling fired at them, break- : ing Sergt. Brown’s leg. Constable Somerville rushed Dowling while he was in the i act of again firing, and the man was then L secured. The woman is in a dangerous condition. J Sydney, Jan. 9. [ Dowling is an ex-Alderman. About a ’ year ago he attacked his wife and another p lady with a tomahawk in a fit of temporary insanity. Since then his whereabouts had been unknown.
