CHRISTCHURCH NEWS.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, last night. John Short, charged with shooting with intent at an unknown cyclist, was before the Court this morning, and was remanded till Tuesday, bail being allowed in ;625.
The Premier arrived from the West Coast last night. In an interview, he said that the coal leases should be put up to public competition. Whether the Government should start a State coal mine had not.yet been decided. In his opinion, if they’ took up State coal mines at the present juncture, it might interfere with private enterprise. As to the command of the Eighth Contingent, nothing further would be known until he returned to Wellington. It was quite true Colonel Davis had been offered the first refusal of the command, and the offer was still open. In regard to the alleged interview with Mr R. E. Hornblow, re the dismissal of co-operatives, the Premier said the statements attributed to him were never made.
