BLOCKING NEW ZEALAND

The officers of the Farmers' Union have ascertained from the Premier that offers of oats for South Africa under the order recently received by Government from the War Office must be lodged by the 13th insb. This makes it impossible for the farmers of New Zealand to get in offers in time. The Union authorities are urging Government to cable to the Colonial Office a strong protest against the conditions being such that the farmers of this colony (as distinguished from merchants),'cannot participate in the contracts, in hope that it may be possible to procure more suitable conditions when supplies are cailc-d for in future.

MEAT CONTRACT.

The Premier received to-uay a cablegram from Mr See, Premier of New South Wales as follows “ Have already sent the following cable to our Agent-General : ‘ Desire you will enter strong protest against repotted contract for supplies of Argentine meat and produce to African forces. The statement that Australia cannot furnish adequate or suitable quantities is wholly unfounded. Government consider such action is an unfavorable contrast to the expression of Imperial solidarity, and that the action of the British colonies justifies preference to them.’ ”
