WOODVILLE, last night. Fifty horses have been purchased in this district for the Ninth Contingent. HAWERA, last night. In the District Court the jury in the case of William Holmes, cnarged with indecent assault on a little girl, failed to agree. A new trial was ordered for to-day. Percy Hawkins, a lad, was found guilty of (opinion assault on a girl aged 7 h years, and was fined £2O.

WELLINGTON, last night. The annual conference of the Council of the Fire Underwriters’ Association of New Zealand opened this morning, but was not open to the press. At the Chambers of Commerce Conference this morning a committee was appointed to consider the question of federation of the Chambers. Mr Keith Ramsay (Dunedin) moved—(l) That it is desirable that all postal contracts be restricted to services carried on under the British flag; (2) that tlie Government be urged to arrange for (a) a monthly service to Vancouver (b) a weekly service between New Zealaad and Australia, suitable to all parts of both islands, to enable the fullest advantage to he taken of the Federal mail service via Brirdisi.

INVERCARGILL, last night.

At tlie Police Court a man charged with shooting ducks out of season raised the defence that he was misled by the Magistrate, Mr Cruickshank’s, decision. Counsel for the Acclimatisation Society said they had publicly announced that they would prosecute in such cases, as they had been advised there were not sufficient grounds for the decision. Under the circumstances, Mr McCarthy, S.M., imposed a nominal penalty of one shilling, with costs £2 13s.
