'At the instance of the Democratic party in the House of Representatives a committee has been appointed to investigate the charges of bribery brought against members of CongressNewspapers and officials allege that nuns have been disbursed with a view to faciliating the purchase of the Danish West Indies. The charges are based on an alleged report of Captain Christmas, sa'id to have been a secret agent of the Danish Government, who claims 10 per cent of the total price paid to recoup him for his outlay. Abney McKinley is reported to be involved in the scandal. Mr Hay refuses to recognise Christmas as an intermediary. MELBOURNE, March 29.
The authorities are reticent with regard to the shooting of officers. Some additional facts have been gathered from returned officers and others. Witton, subsequent to the trial, sent two cables to his relatives in Melbourne, announcing that he had been sentenced to life imprisonment, but neither came to hand. At the trial Morant stated he was only carrying out orders given by a superior officer to Captain Hunt, and passed on by Hunt •to him. Altogether s x arrests were made in connection with the case, but these were withdrawn between the arrests in October and the court-martial on February 20th. The arrestees acted as leaders of the Bush Veldt Carbineers in numerous engagements, mthiding a battle with Commandant Beyers at Petersburg. Lenehan was court-martialled for noguct of duty as a commanding officer in connection with the affair, and was imprpned fo' twelve months in CaDetown Castle Major Thomas, a Melbojr.e solicitor, defended the men at the trial.
