LABOR DISPUTES
By Telegraph—l’ress Assooiation. Dunedin, last night.
Tho award in tho seamen's dispute was made in tho Arbitration Court to-day. The Court, in delivering judgment, stated that a majority were of opinion that thero had not been shown any such material alteration in tho conditions which existed in 1899, when tho last awards wero made, as would justify them in increasing tho rato of wages and overtimo existing at tho present time. Since the awards had boon made, the Federal tariff camo into existence, and considerable uncertainty exists as to the ultimate effect on the carrying trade of tho colony. The claims made by the soamon had been carefully aud fully gone into at tho former hearing. A majority of too Court considered that in the present dispute the Court ought not to interfere with tho last award. Mr Slator, who was in the minority, thought) the increase of 10s asked for should bo granted.
