COMMERCIAL.

The following cable has been received from the Agent General, dated London, January 3rd :— 11 Trade for all classes of mutton has been very slow. Prices have been barely maintained. The tendency of the mutton market seems to be to decline. The average price to-day of Canterbury mutton is s?yd, and of North Island mutton 4£d. American mutton is plentiful at 4d. There is scarcely any demand for lamb. The stocks of lamb on hand are light, The average price to-day of New Zealand lamb,-Canterbury brand, is 54d. The beef market is very dull. Supplies of American chilled beef are large. Quotations for New Zealand beef, nominal, are : Now Zealand hinds sd, fores 4d. The butter market is dull, buyers holding back, expecting prices to go lower. The price of butter to-day is 108 s to Ills per owt. The cheese market is very firm. The price of cheese to-day is 60s per cwt. There are Bmall supplies of cheese on hand. The hemp market is steady. The price of good fair Weilineton grade on spot to-day is £32 10s, January to March shipments £'AB 10s. The cocksfoot seed market is quiet. There is no pressure to sell cocksfoot Beed. New Zealand 171 b standard is at 65s per owt.
