OBITUARY.

There passed away at midnight last night one of Gisborne's early journalists, Mr John Gardiner Henderson, at the age of fifty-four. Mr Henderson was a man of exceptional ability, with a facile and kindly pen that was never employed except to good purpose, such as calling attention to a public grievance or commending some individual for good work done. He was a descriptive writer vUiose sketches were always illumined with a fund of information, which retained the interest, whatever the subject might be. His journalistic career was commenced in Auckland, and on turning his attention to Gisborne he edited, sub edited,, or reported for papers that have gone out of existence, but are remembered for thejr cleverness and tho kindly spirit in which they were conducted. Mr Heno,- -on himself dropped out of the arduoue ins of journalism, but the old feeling was ever there, and he was the author of many a bright paragraph that had the finishing touches of the master hand. Latterly he was subject to a severe illness, but bravely bore up until a few weeks ago, when ha had to take to his bod. Death eventually* came as a happy release. Deceased was the only son of the late Mr James Henderson, of Auckland. He leaves a wife and two grown up sons to mourn their loss. The interment is to be private.
