CHRISTCHURCH NEWS.
LORD HAWKE. By Tolegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, last night. The Secretary of tlio New Zealand Cricket Council has received a letter from Lord Hawke, expressing regret that he was unable to accompany the team. At the time of writing (Nov. 23) his mother was no better, and there was no chance of his getting away in December. He expressed the hope that negotiations with Australia would bo successful, as tho team were keen to play in Sydney and Melbourne. AN ISLAND MATCH.
The Cricket Council will try to arrange a match for a South Island v. Lord Hawke’s team, instead of the South Otago match, at Balclutha, on February 18th and 19th. GOOD HARVEST.
Rain set in this afternoon, and fel steadily for some hours. Farmers were beginning to get anxious about their crops, which are now splendid, and with fine weather the harvest, though late, should be a record one. A SERIOUS CHARGE.
At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday Thornton Hewson, a middle-aged man, was remanded on charges of causing a noxious thing, to wit beer, to be taken by his stepdaughter, four years of age, and wilfully illtreating the child. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £7 each,
