POULTRY INDUSTRY
IMPORTANCE OE THE EXPORT " TRADE. 11 A mooting of tboso interested in the j poultry export industry is to bo held at the Farmers' Club at 11 this morning to coufer with Mr D. D. Hyde, the Government Poultry Expert, in regard to this j district participating in the export trade. ( It has been suggested to the Government that a grader might be appointed for this f district, hut that, Mr Hyde poiuts out, ' would bo altogether too great an exponso, j and would not bo justified until the district was a very largo exporter. He has, how- . ever, paid a visit to tho district specially to confer with poultry breeders. Ho points out that this district can now participate in tho growing trade, tho present proportion of which is 500 fowls per day. Auckland being the nearest port, the birds can be sent there in crates each containing 15. As the fowls are not allowed to have food for 24 hours before being killed, the nuestion of food during the 3ea trip would not do a block. The cost of freight would not be excessive. Tho fowls would be takon charge of, killed, frozen, and sent to market. With a little experience tho class of fowl would be understood, in which case there should not be many rejects. In many places tho people have become quite enthusiastic on tho subject, and tho quantity of fowls sent to the depots in tho four centres steadily increases. Mr Hyde returns South to-night, but at the meeting this morning will bo pleased to give all information to those interested. In the poultry export industry there is a substantial source of profit, and once people become fully alive to that faot Gisborne is certain to share largely in the trade,
