THE CITY BAND.

(Special to Times.) Masterton, last night. Up at 5 a.m., having marching practice for the afternoon. Lunch at eleven. Bands marched from town to the grounds at 12 o’clock. There was a wonderful attendance. The bands are reckoned the best that over attended. In the marching competition Gisborne was twelfth. Southland was eleventh, the first time this band was unplaced for a prize since the marching contests started. Gisborne beat Waihi, Woolston, and Ruahine Battalion. Everyone is quite satisfied. Considering the class of competitors, they quite expected to be right out of it. Massed bands, representing 500 bandsmen, playod tho contest march under Judge Hume. The effect was grand. The start of the second tost piece ■will be made to-morrow night. Everyone is fit and doing well. Lieutenant Boere is leaving for Gisborne on Friday. The weather is terribly warm. The Gisborne Band is gainiug valuable experience. Mr .McAra, third prize player, kindly assisted us as soprano in the marching eontest. The local committee are working things excellently. The Gisborne City Band received hearty congratulations after, the test piece last night from Lieutenant Herd and others, and had whips of applause to-day.
