THE MAJERONI DRAMATIC COMPANY

“ ENLISTED, OR THE CHAIN GANG.”

The Theatre Royal was well filled on Saturday evening, when the Majeroni Company produced the grand military drama, “ Enlisted,” which is from the pen of Mr F. C. F. Harcourt. The piece was a most appropriate one for Saturday evening, humor predominating over villainy, and virtue finally triumphing over all. This‘Company has the happy knack of making its audience wish for more, and it will therefore be welcome news to all to learn that the season has been extended for two nights. Mr M. Majeroni seems to revel in the villainy which enters into most of the Company’s productions, and tbe manner in which he is hissed each night by the.pittites, shows how well he succeeds in his parts. He gave a telling representation of the character of Captain Carthew, playing throughout with consideraole force. Mr G. Majeroni, as Frank Harrington, was, of course, the central figure, of the drama, and he gave an excellent interpretation of the character, being warmly applauded at every appearance. Much of the success of the drama was due to Mr J. B. Fitzgerald, who appeared as Colonel Courtney, giving the character due weight and impressiveness and expressing well the love of a soldier for his pretty daughter. Mr F. Grist played tbe part of Lieut. Harry Manisty with great success, and Mr H. Gratton was thoroughly at home as Mike McGrath. Mr P. A. Savieri has established himself as a warm favorite with the Gisborne public. It is true_ that he has to play parts which take with the audience, but he never lets that fact detract from the care with which he renders his part. As Ike he appeared to great advantage, and he well deserved the great receptien he received. Miss Hilda Meade appeared somewhat at a disadvantage on Saturday evening, inasmuch as she was suffering from a relaxed throat, She gave a most sympathetic rendering of the character of Evelyn Courtney, and throughout displayed great dramatic power. Her efforts were much appreciated by the audience, who were most persistent in their applause. Miss N. o°deu as Minnie Harrington gained fresh honors for her clever representation of that character, and Misg M. Renno made the most of the part of Susan. A word of praise is specially due to the management for the manner in which the drama was presented. Every attention was paid to detail and the best use was made of the stage facilities. Mention might also be made of the music supplied by Messrs Charles and F. Fox, whose choice selection of pieces added considerably to the success of the drama. To-night ‘‘Judge Not” will be produced. and to morrow evening the season will be brought to a close with Both these dramas are excellent work' and should draw crowded houses.
