British and Foreign Bible Society.

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the British and Foreign Bible Society (Gisborne Auxiliary) was held in the Rev. H. Williams’ grounds, Te Rau, yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance, upwards of seventy ladies and gentlemen being present. The proceedings opened with the hymn '• Cling to the Bible,” followed by prayer by the Rev. J. G. Paterson. Mr R. T. Kohere having read Psalm 119, the President, Mr C. A DeLautour, delivered an interesting address, giving an account of the work of the Society during the past year. He pointed out that the present year was tho centennial year, and the Gisborne

Auxiliary expected to raise the sum of £IOO to send Home as their contribution

towards the fund. He detailed the progress the Bible Society had made of late years, pointing out that the Holy Book, or portions thereof, had been translated into no less than 367 different languages. There was one new language in the Solomon Islands into which it had been trans-

lated, and everywhere the good tidings were spreading. Mr A. Graham presented the balancesheet, which was of a most satisfactory character, showing a balance of £6l 5s sd. Of this sum it was intended to give £SO to w'fffds the £IOO to be raised as Gisborne’s contribution to the centennial fund. Mr Peckover, secretary, gave a short account of the work in Gisbotne, quoting a number of statistics to show the progress that had been made.

The election of officers took place, and Mr DeLautour was re-elected president, and Messrs Peckover and Graham secretary and treasurer • respectively. Committee : Mesdames J. East, Graham, McNair ; Miss L. Morice ; Messrs Campbell Thomson, H. Kane, K. Kohere, F. Stafford, 0. Hawkins, the Protestant ministers and Salvation Army officers. Musical items were contributed by Rev, Chatterton, Misses Schultz and McCredie, and others. Refreshments were supplied by a committee of ladies. A collection in aid of the Society's funds was taken up and a sum of between £4 and £5 was obtained.
