ATHLETICS.
[By Telegraph—Tress Association.] Dunedin, last night
Tho weather promises to bo line for the amatour athletic sports to-morrow. The rain which foil to-day has not affected the track, which, if it keeps firio, will bo in good order. A koen contost for tho shield is expected between Canterbury and Otago, with a probable win for Canterbury. MR THORNTON DYING.
J. R. Thornton, who is supposed to have shot himself with a pea ritlo at fit. Claire this morning, took a turn for tho worse to-uight, and is scarcely expected *to last through the night.
A GIRL’S DEATH.
At an inquest at Tapanui on the young woman Barclay, tho jury found that she died from a cause incidental to tho malady from which she was suffering, together with an operation which was necessary, and expressed tho opinion that Dr Robertson did ovorything in his powor to save hor lifo.
