Napier, last night. The Fire Brigades Demonstrationjopened to-day in beautiful weather. Although no holiday is being observed there is a large attendance. Some delay occurred at tho commencement owing to many formalities, but a start was made at about 10 o’clock with tho hose and hydrant event, live men, for which 42 teams wero entered. After three teams had run, tho water main in Thackeray street burst and further delayed the proceedings, but while repairs were being effected tho manual event was , gone on with. _ j The bursting of a main this morning completely upset tho programme of the demonstration, and thero aro now five ovonts in a partially finished condition. Up to the luncheon adjournment Goro was loading in tho hose and hydrant event, fivo men, with 40 l-Oscc., Kumara second, 43 2-ssec. In the hosoreel flat, five men, Dunedin, 57sec, is loading, Hastings, Palmerston North, and Oaversham being disqualified. In the manual, ono man, J. Dunn, Ashburton, 70 4-sscc, is leading. Crose, of Waipawa, was disqualified in this event.

Cavorsham was disqualified on the ground of not striking the second disc Hastings was disqualified becauso the second branch was not connected; Palmorston North was disqualified for running the reel over the hose ; Kaiapoi was disqualified for dragging the hose ; Lyttelton was disqualified for dragging the hose; Stratford was disqualified for failing to break the second disc; Ashburton was disqualified for dragging the hose ; Christchurch was disqualified for the “ burst up ” ; Westport was disqualified over the full turn of the branch ; Reefton was disqualified for fragging the hose. Scratched : Petone, Sumner, and Waipawa. Nono of the events at the fire brigades demonstration are finished, but the above are the positions at the conclusion of tho day’s proceedings.
