TRAGEDIES IN QUEENSLAND. Apparently Queensland will never he short of. a tragedy. It is seldom one is not before llie public mind in that state.' The latest affair reported is that in which a Kanaka, already imprisoned on a charge of murder, killed a white man with an axe. It is astonishing that, when the treacherous Kanakas have been the authors of so many crimes, there should lie such a number of rapacious capitalists still urging that the system of black slavery—for that is really what jt is—should be continued. The Kanaka is not a desirable individual at any time but under the conditions of life where lie is usually employed, there is little wonder that the worst traits of his character come to the surface. In stead of an observer being surprised at the number of crimes committed by Kanakas, the surprise must rather lie that the number is not greater. It is remarkable that some people should be so much concerned about the future of the Kanaka if the capitalist is deprived of his cheap assistance ; but all real well-wishers for Austro.. 1 lia will not he much impressed by the mock pathos given vent to by, some of those interested.
