The Gisborne Woolbrokers’ Association hold then periodical sale to-day. Capt. Edwin wived yesterday : “ Moderate to strong easterly winds; glass fall slowly ; tides moderate.” The East Coast Mounted Rifles and City Rand paraded at Patutahi yesterday afternoon, and held a concert in the evening.

In reply to “an elector’s ” letter, we are informed by the Returning Officer that there was not open voting, a’nd that the secrecy of the ballot was maintained. A lease of over ten thousand acres of the Mangatu has been arranged by Messrs Daigety and Ou. with Messrs Rutledge, of Victoria. It is pleasing to nolo the increasing number of new settlers that are selecting in the East Coast district, and wt hope to see this happy state oi affairs continued.

At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday judgment was given for plaintiff in the case of Elizabeth Stevenson (Mr Jones) v. L. G. M. Pettit, claim £'ti 10s, and costs £1 6s. In the judgment summons ease of S. McLeruon (Mr Chrisp) v. M. Daly, on the application of plaintiff Mr Barton, S.M., made an order requiring defendant to pay the amount of debt and costs, £9 9s, forthwith, in default 10 days’ imprisonment in Gisborne gaol. “ This land question is a difficult one,” remarked His Worship the Mayor at the Cook Memorial meeting last evening. “ Some people think that they can get the Haiti Hill for looking at it. Wo have tried for a long time to take a piece of land on tho Waikanae for the Borough by proclamation, and have not got it through. We find ourselves blocked by tho Native Land Court and in many other directions. You begin a thing and you never know where it will end ”

A pretty wedding, which interested a large circle of friends, was celebrated at the residence of the bride's parents, Whataupoko, on Tuesday, when Miss Bessie Foster, second daughter of Mr J. F. Foster, was united in the bonds of matrimony to Mr Charles Grey, of Waihuka. Rev. B. F. Eothwell performed tho ceremony. The bride was tastefully attired in grey cashmere, with a cream silk-front and grey glace silk strappings. She was <nven away by her father, and attended by Miss Nellie Foster as bridesmaid. The costumes, which were much admired, were made under the supervision of Miss Foster, of Mr C. Hawkins’ establishment, Gladstone road.

At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., Mary Cramp claimed J-60 18s 6d as being due under agreement to purchase from Elizabeth Stevenson, formerly associated with plaintiff in tho proprietorship of the Universal Dining Rooms. Defendant set up a counter claim of H3S for boarding p aintiff’s two boys. After bearing the evidence His Worship said that considering nil the circumstances of the ease defendant wn3 not entitled to recover any portion of the counter claim, and no costs would be allowed on it. The settlers on the Waikakahi Estate can now congratulate themselves upon having had four good seasons running. The crops this year have averaged from 63 to 102 bushels per acre. In commotion with the fact that Councillor Jones headed the poll yesterday, it is noteworthy that this Councillor during the two years only missed two ordinary meetings, and on those occasions he was absent from the district on business.

posts, which had to he carted from town. Mr Matthewson said that when anyone saw two or three totara trees growing, they reported it as a hush of totara.

Mr. I-larding asked of the meeting of the Harbor Board yesterday, how it was that the Board had not supplied stone for the Esplanade road. The Chairman said the Overseer had concluded that lie could do the worn cheaper by having the stone placed where he wanted it. and broken, thus saving douoling handling. Mr Harding said that unless he. misunderstood the Overseer said that he could not get any price or satisfactory reply from the Engineer. The, latter said everything had been g t ready to supply the crushed stone, hut the Borough Overseer had ananged to get it broken on the road. The Chair man said that the Overseer had been instructed to get the stone in the cheapest way, and had cornu lered it best to get it delivered whole, thus preventing second handling, and getting it to any point where lie required it.

A meeting of the West End Ilockcy Club was held at the Keeuid Reign Hotel last evening, Mr R. A. Douglas presiding. The following new members were elected .—Messrs K. Clarke, Wi Friday, 11. T. Po'.a.ka, 11.I 1 . Koliere, and Brown Turei. The following officers and committees were elected Captain, Mr H. Plinuner ; Vice-captain, Mr U. A. Douglas ; .Selection Committee, Messrs Plimmer, Douglas, and Kohere ; Management; Committee, Messrs Plimmer, Douglas, W, Lewis, Bushmill, and Harding, It was decided to enter a team for the matches in connection with the Hockey Association. Regret was expressed that Mr VV. P. Waitai would lie unable to take part in the opening matches of the season, and also that the Club would lie without, the service of Mr E. O’Meara.
