Mr Chamberlain, replying to Mr Gathcart Watson, said that on learning heroafter tho Governor of Fiji's viows he would considor if an alteration of taxation were advisable. It would bo unprecedented and inconvenient to ask Mr Soddon for a report on the native regulations promulgated in Fiji. The proper method for natives petitioning would bo through the Governor. Ordnance 20 of 1887 was still operative. As at present advised, ho was of opinion that it would be necessary to retain powers of deportation.
