IS IT CRUELTY ?
(Per Press Association.) Dunedin, last nigh
At tho annual meeting of the Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals tho question of dehorning cattlo was mentioned. It was stated that tho Society was in communication with tho Ilomo Society on tho subject, and whon a reply camo tho mattor would bo carefully considered. Mi' -John Roberts gave his experience, and said ho had seen cattlo feeding a few minutes after their horiiß had been romoved. Ho had soon cattle shockingly injured by other animals horning them. Mr Justieo Williams said that they should bo exceedingly cautious in the mutter. Members of a Society liko theirs
wore apt to fall into a rnistuke in treating animals as if they wero human beings. Thoro was an essential difference. If a man was going to havo an operation performed ho underwent suffering belore and after it was performed. The thought of it was suffering. Mr Roberts said that what was really cruolty to a humun being was riot necessarily cruelty to an animal. They must, howovor, take care that animals suffered no unnecessary pains.
