UNIONISTS OPPOSE CHANGE,

Newspaper rumors allege that the Duke oE Devonshire, Lord Sclborne, Lord Lansdowne, Lord Stanley, and Air Arnold Foster, Mr Ritchie, and at least 100 Unionists, are unconvinced of the desirableness of the change. Mr Chamberlain believes that if the Freetraders win the elections the next Parliament will be short lived, and that afterwards the education of the country in favor of the new policy ,wiU he complete.

Mr Reid, interviewed on the new policy of Great Britain, summed up his opinion as follows : Wh re (here is- a protective tariit there should he a preference, but where there is a sound revenue tariff there should he none. He was profoundly convinced that the suggested alteration oT the policy was not only inadvisable in the interests or the British people, hut was absolutely threatening to the security of the whole Empire. Sir E. Barton refuses to he drawn until the full details are received.
QUEENSLAND PREMIER FAVORS THE PROPOSAL.
