SCHOOL ATTENDANCE ACT,

A number of parents wore charged flfc the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning for failing to comply with tho School Attendance Act iu sending their children to school. In support of tho information Messrs Bright (Chairman of tho Gisborne School Committee), Quigley (secretary), and Bow ley (headmaster) appeared. '.Elizabeth Solomon was charged with being the parent of a child who had failed to put in the required number of attendances at the Gisborne School. Defendant was not in attendance. Mr Quigley pointed out that it was for tbo parent to show why tho necessary attendances had not been made. Mr Rowley said the child in question was a bov of nine, and had not reached Standard 1. He had been takeu away to Worship inflicted a tine of 5s and

Messrs A. Gregg, A. Earnage, Vf. G. Hatten, and W. Brown were similarly charged, and each fined ss, costs 7s. Hi’s Worship stated that parents were liable to a penalty of 10s for every week in which they failed to sond their children to school. If he had other complaints he would have to increase the penalty. A valid reason would havo to be given. Mr Bright, chairman, stated that tho committee’had decided that all irregularities would be treated in a similar manner without respect to persons. It was in the interest of the children, and they felt it was their duty to carry out the law. His Worship said the committee would £avo his assistance in enforcing tho Act.
