The Board of Education has decided not to declare a holiday for Arbor Day. ’ ‘- : -The Auckland Customs revenue for June amounted to £45,330, as compared with £44,843 in the corresponding month of 1902, an increase of £487, and making an increase of £SOOO on the first three months of the financial year.
WELLINGTON, last night. The Bank of New Zealand net profits for the year were £195,500. In view of the uncertainty as to when Judge Williams will be able to reach Wellington, the Appeal Court decided not to take the licensing cases this week. The case ol the Minister of Mines v. Hislop, is fixed for Monday, to enable Mr Guinness, Speaker of the House, who is 'engaged as counsel, to appear, Daniel Vinson Dossitor,~employed in a chemist’s shop, has been arrested on a charge of performing an operation on Mrs Isabella McCallum, whose husband is said to be in Dunedin. i
WAIPAWA, last night. Burglars stole £SO worth of goods from a store at Ongaonga last night. ,Tliey took the storekeeper’s horse and cart, and cut the telephone wire to Waipawa.
PAHIATUA, last night.- ' 'At five o’clock this morning a 14roomed house was completely destroyed. It was .owned by Mr Howard, and occupied by Mr Mackalick. Nothing was saved. .The insurances amount to £505. PALMERSTON N., last night.
Mr H. S. Fitzherbert, solicitor, of Palmerston, lias been appointed Crown Prosecutor in connection with the Supreme Court, which holds its first sitting in this district in October next. I-lAWERA, last night. At a meeting of the Executive of the West Coast Band Contest, the report regarding the progress of the contest was most satisfactory. Mr Thussell, of Nelson, will act as judge. Services in connection with the opening of the new Anglican Church, costing nearly £4OOO, were largely attended to-day. The \ preachers were Archdeacons Twogood and Cole. The building is of brick. •.WANGANUI, last night.
The Customs duties at Wanganui for the quarter ended amounted to £16,728, being over £2,000 .in excess of the similar period of last year, and constituting a record for the district. OAMARU, last night.
LA’ man named Edward Garthwaite had his foot run over'by an engine at the railway station this morning It being terribly crushed amputation will probably be necessary. Judge Wiljiams is unable to leave here to attend the Appeal Court until Saturday.
