A SAD AFFAIR.

At tho inquest on Maurice Whelan, the jury returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally killod by a railway engine striking him on tho head. No blame was attachable to anyone. Deceased was last seen alive about half past five on Wednesday night on the public road about 400 yards from whete tho body was found. Ho thon appeared to be under the influence of drink, though several witnesses stated that they had never seen him drunk. Whon spoken to on the occasion ho was last seen he did not reply. A oleaner at $ Christchurch found blood on the cow- % catoher of the Wednesday afternoon train
from Culverden. The driver of the train * did not notice any person on the line at the spot where the accident occurred.
