THE FORTHCOMING SHOW.

(To the Editor Gisborne Times.)'

Sir, —Being under the impression that the local show is held for tbo encouragement of breeding stock suitable for giving best possible results to those interested, I would like to draw your attention to the distribution of some of the prizes offered by the Agrieultnral and Pastoral Society It seems to me, that considering the strides the dairying industry is making in this district that the prizes offered to two of the best dairying breeds are so small that (and I am not alone in thinking this) it would be almost an.insult to ask anyone to take a good cow or bull to compete when there is a certain amount of trouble and risk attached. I might point out that there ate but three classes for Jerseys and prize money totalling £4 10s, for the Ayrshire only two classes and £3. Considering the number of these cattle in the district, does this not strike you as being very one-sided when compared with the 17 classes for Shorthornß and .£SO Os lOd offered in prizes, besides the medal given by the Society ? The Committee appointed seem to have entirely .overlooked the progress of the dairying industry, and the desirability of breeding cattle best suited for that purpose, and would-it not have been a greater inducement to add a little to their list than the proviso “if only one entry no prize will be given ”?—I am, etc., Fair Play.
