TUPAROA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

A pleasing little presentation was made to Miss Hartley by tho Tuparoa Concert Committee, which took tho form of a greenstone brooch set with pearls ; though tho present was small it showed the high appreciation entertained by the Committeo for the arduous, painstaking, and kino manner in which she helped us all to make a success of the concert.

WAIAPU RUGBY UNION.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

A meoting of tho Waiapu Rugby Union was held at Te Puka Hotel on Saturday night. Present: Messrs Woods arid Taylor, Tuparoa; Durrant and J. N. Williams, Waipiro ; J. Thornton and Earle, Tokomaru ; M. Murphy and Reynolds, Toiago. In the absence of tho Chairman, Rev. V. Fitzgerald, Mr M. Murphy occupied the chair. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Gf Reynolds, seconded by Mr J. N. Williams, to affiliate with the Poverty Bay Rugby Uuiou as a sub-union, as the committee of the New Zealand Union were disinclined to recommend the affiliation of the Union.

Tho referee in tbo Tokoinaru-Tuparoa match reported Duff, of tho Tuparoa team, for using insulting language. After considerable discussien it was decided to severely caution the offender, it being the first case of this kind brought before the Union.

Tho management committee of the Union met afterwards, and arranged the following matches for the second round: — July 18th: Tokomaru v. Toiago, at Tokomaru, referee, Rev. Fitzgerald ; July 25th : Tokomaru v. Tuparoa, at Kuirere, referoe, Mr K. S. Williams; July 25th: Toiago v. Waipiro, at Toiago, referee, Mr J. Murphy; August 1st): Trial match North v. TUPAROA v. TOKOMARU

There was a large 'attendance at Tokomaru on Saturday last to witness the.football match between the Tokomaru. and Tuparoa Clubs. From the outset', - Tuparoa endeavored to make the play s.s open as possible with a view to using their backs, but Tokomaru, on the other hand, kept the ball on the ground, and their forwards worked with a will, and having the best of it in the scrums for trine gave the opposing backs little chance to operate in attack. From a series of scrums near the visitor’s goal-line, Murphy got possession of the hall and dashed in, securing first blood for the home team. Gerrard took the kick, but failed to improve the score. On resuming, the ball tre veiled up and down the' field at a brisk pace, and after a lot of fast rushes by the local forwards, Fairlie secured possession of the oval and, beating the visitors’ wingthreqquarter and full-back, scored the second try for the home team. Te Rawhiti was entrusted with the kick, but failed to put the ball over. Ad half-time, the score stood : Tokomaru, 6 points ; Tuparoa, nil. The ball was no sooner in play,, ■again than Tuparoa assumed aggressive tactics, but the ground gained was lost through indecision on the part of their backs as to who should take the ball, and the Tokomaru forwards, taking advantage of this, swept down the field, and Aorere Matahiki scored a well-deserved try, which Fairlie failed to convert. There was no further score, and a good game ended in favor of Tokomaru by 9 points to nil. For the winners, J. Pokaihau., Earle, and Gerrard were the pick of the backs, and of a good pack of forwards Murphy, Fairlie, and Aorere Matahiki were the best. For the losers Watkins, I-licks, and Wi I-lenare were the leading lights among the backs, and Ludbrook, Taylor, and Tylden of the forwards. Mr T. G. Buchanan gave every satisfaction as referee. This concludes the first round of the cup matches, the relative positions of the teams 'being as follows :—Toiago, 2 wins, 1 loss, 4 points ; VVaipiro, 1 win, 1 ■draw, 1 loss, 3 points ; Tokomaru. 1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss, 3 points ; Tuparoa, 1 win, 2 losses, 2 points. At Waipiro on Saturday last, the local team defeated Toiago Club by 5 points to nil. The game was a mest interesting one, Waipiro s win corning as a surprise to most people.
