Eight candidates received substantial support, Cardinals Rampolla and Vannutella heading the list, DePietro and Capecalatine following. After lunch a conference was held, with the object of reaching an agreement, but the second ballot was practically the same as the first. Cardinal Herrara kept his bed while the voting was proceeding. Three infirmary employees fetoned the voting papers from his cell. Italian troops were posted in tho vicinity of the Vatican to ensure liberty of deliberation. AH food and communications are passed through four revolving trap doors, guarded by officials. All letters and newspapers passing in are scrutinised by tho censor. Even chickens and fish are I opened before being admitted. INCONCLUSIVE BALLOTS. CARDINAL RAMPOLLA HAS A PAINFUL MISHAP. GREAT THRONG NEAR VATICAN

It is reported that Cardinal Rampolla on the fourth ballot obtained 80 votes. Inside the VaticaD, Swiss Guards watch every court, stairway, and gateway, while ohurch officials render it impbssslble to hold any communication with the innor , enclosure. Some signalling from tho Vatican window induced Cardinal Oreglia to strengthen precautions. ' Tens of thousands are assembled in the vicinity of the Vatican, watebingfor smoke i signals in readiness to acclaim the Pope. A fish bone lodged in Cardinal Rampolla’s throat, and necessitated surgical aid.
