BAND CONTEST.

In connection with the band contest a garden party was held to day, and was largely attended. The bands were wel corned by Mr Major, M.H.R., and the Mayor, Mr Robbins. Solos and quartettes were commenced this morning. In the double bass W. Hughes, Hawera, with 40 points (the maximum), was the first and only player. In the trombone solos, Slye, Wattara, was first with 39 points; J. Caulton, Hasting-, 34, second; and Lee, Hawera, 33, third. 'E flat horn : J. May, Hastings, 38 points, 1; A. White, Hastings, 37, 2; W. Coulthart, Waitara, 35, 3, E flat bass: G. McDonald, Waitara, 39 points, 1; G. Potham, Hastings, 37 points, 2.
