After tho olcction, Cardinal Sarto, following cho usual ceremony, pronounced tho public Benediction from tho inner balcony of St. Peter's. Ho was received with acclamation by onormous crowds. The now Pope, who at tho timo of his election was Patriarch of Venice, is 68 years of age, and is described as being of a conciliatory temper and a favorite with tho clericals and Liberals alik3; of humble origin, having risen from a country curacy. At St. Potor’s ho blessed tho congregation, and recoived thunderous acclamations. with crioß of “ LoDg live Pius tho Tenth.” A groat procossion of diplomatists, high prolates, and notablos subsequently visited tho Vatican and offored congratulations. Tho newspapers state that his distinguishing characteristic is piety. Ho is considered clovor, firm, kind, and of raro Bugacity.
