Shaw, Secretary to the Treasury, speaking at Chicago, said Amerioa was the most prosperous nation in the world, because she produced and consumed more than the others. She exports 10 per cent, of her net production, and imports 7 per cent, of her net consumption. He considered State assistance necessary to secure a regular steamship service for the development of trade with South America, South Africa, and the islands south of the Equator.
