NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN.
Per Press Association. , New Plymouth, last night. At a meeting of the Executive of the National Council of Women to-day resolutions were passed that the time has arrived to remove all legal disqualifications on illegitimate children ; that the State should make gonorous provision for the maintenance and supervision of the education of such children,, the parents being compelled to contribute to their support according to their means ; that when paternity is proved 3ucb children should possess equal legal status with those borne in wedlock, being registered in the father’s name ; that a female officer be appointed, her duty being to discover parentage bofore tho birth of an illegitimate child, with the view of enforcing proper maintonunce ; that Government be urged to established homes for illegitimate destitute children. In the evening addresses were given on the temperance quostion by Mesdames Sievwriglit and Atkinson, which dealt with the demoralisation of the Maoris through drink, it being urged that Natives should have a voice by voting on the matter, especially in the King Country. The Rov. Bennett also spoko strongly on tho same question.
