STOWAWAYS FROM SYDNEY. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. The Police Court ordered two stowaways on the Ventura to be remanded till Wednesday, and then to be returned to Sydney. SUPREME COURT SENTENCES. NAPIER, last night. In the Supremo Court to-day Andrew McLuckie, convicted of attempted murder of his wife and daughter, was sentenced to 15 years. Charles Tomlin, |for stealing partnership moneys, was” sentenced to four months. Edward Scarf, for‘causing actual bodily harm, (W r as sentenced to three years, and Harry Leo, for theft, received 12 months’ probation. REMARKABLE ARSON CASE. STRATFORD, last night. Further developments have arisen is connection with the arson case. Some weeks ago one Salmon was committed to trial on his confession for burning a furniture factory two years ago. An alleged accomplice, Hitchock, will also be charged with the offence, and Salmon will be called as a witness against him. VETERANS’ ASSOCIATION. .WELLINGTON, last night. The annual meeting of the delegates of the New Zealand Veterans’ Association elected the following officers: Secretary, Mr S. Stiddolph ; treasurer, Captain|Hamerton; Committee, Colonel Newall, Captains Beamish and Barclay. NEGLECT OF AN INFANT. CHRISTCHURCH, last night. Agnes Emily Brooks, of New Brighton, the holder of an infants’ home license, and Albert Herbert Brooks, her husband, were committed to trial to-day on a charge of wilfully neglecting a child so as to cause it unnecessary suffering. A SHOCKING CASE. ASHBURTON, last night.At the Magistrate’s Court Edward Watkins was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for indecent exposure. LIQUOR IN RAILWAY REFRESHMENT ROOMS. ASHBURTON, last night, The liquor case against Dineen was remanded till next Friday. THE BARTERING OF LAND. TIMARU, last night. At a meeting of the Canterbury Land Board, held here to-day, the Commissioner intimated that it was the intention of the Board to prohibit persons who had been successful at a ballot from taking part in any subsequent ballots. This would stop the bartering of laud which now goes on.
