Melbourne, Oct. 25,
Lord Jersey considers that the six hatters’ inoident had undoubtedly had a bad effect in England. He drew a distinction between the people of other nations that Australia did not want and those who wished to oome here to make a livelihood, and who would greatly strengthen the country. Stagnation in population was hardly a good thing for a oountry with such immense resources and possibilities as Australia. He did not personally think much of General Booth’s scheme. He could not see how immigration like that would help the oountry. Australia required people who would take up land and not merely augment its census. He did not think there was any deep-seated idea in England that capital lent to Australia was insecure. If the loans were oonsoli* dated and future borrowings regulated Australia would bo in a better position. The Commonwealth would certainly be at no disadvantage unless something of an extreme naturo were done. An effort made in connection with the Papua Bill to sooure no-license to sell intoxicants in New Guinea was defeated by 25 to 9. The inter-State golf championship was won by Victoria easily.
