SHIPPING REFORMS.
MEETING CAPTURED BY SEAMEN
I‘K'KSS ASSOCIATION Auckland, last night. A meeting of shipowners and others interested, called to dieous3 restrictions on the coastal floot, was held to-night, but was swamped by a large attendance of soamen, who oaptured the meeting. The following motion was proposed by the Secretary of tho Seamen’s Uoion, That in view of tho recent numerous shipping disasters, with great loss of life, on orr coasts, this moating stroDgly urges the Government to amond tho Shipping Act on lines of the Imperial Act, so that all vessel shall have a winter and summer load line, aid shall carry no deck ca-goes during tho months of May, June, July, August, and September, and further ro solves that (a) a qualified marine arebi tect should be appointed by Government to opprovo of ah plans for vessels bring built in this colony ; (b) a stricter supervision should bo exercised over tho provisioning of vessels sailing from our ports ; (0) the reoommendations of nautical court of inquiry, and tho rider of tho Supreme Court jury dealing with the ClaymoreKapanui disaster should be give immediate effeot.”
An amendment to adjourn the motion having been lost, tho owners withdrew. The obovo motion was then carried.
