MISAPPROPRIATION.
CHARGES AGAINST SOLICITOR AND CLERK, KrmflWJEn.'H I’KESS ASSOCIATION
Christchurch, last night. F. H. Bruges, solicitor, and J. G:odmsD, clerk, were committed for (rial to-dsy cn five charges of stealing moneys belonging to a clieDt, Henry Tuck. Aooused are alleged to have stolen £3OO on April 18tb, 1903 ; £4OO on Ootober 12sb, 1904 ; £260 March Ist, 1901 ; £450 on March 9;b, 1898; £6O on February sth, 1904 The evidence for the prosecution was to tho effect that Goodman had received from Tuck the various amounts on the understanding that they were to be advanced on certain properties which Tuck had inspected. In respect of some of the advancos Took received several instalments of interest, and in others hoard nothing. It transpired after Bruges' bankruptcy that the amounts had not been invested in the way supposed, but bad gone into Brugos’ general account and Tuck had lost them,
Bruges is a well-known Christohurch lawyer, and Goodman his clerk. The present charges arose out of tho reoent bankruptcy proceedings, when Bruges’ books were found to bo in a chaotic condition, and that his business had been conducted almost without oversight, by Goodman. Bruges had been Tack’s solicitor. Tuck entrusted money to him for investment, Goodman being the man whom witness generally saw and conduated business with.
