Charles Line and John Hioton,fashionably dressed youDg men, Hinton recently from England, and Lane from Melbourne, were arrested at Timaru on Saturday on a series of charges of obtaining money by a trick known as “ ringing the changes.” Accused were before the Court this morning, when it wa? shown they obtained money from several business places in Timaru in this way, and they weie sentenced to three monthb’ imprisonment. Christchurch, last night.

His Honor said the calendar was loDg, but there was nothing in it to indicate an inctease of crime io the district or celling for special comment. Tbe Chief Justice this morning sat to deal with pii-oners convicted at the recent criminal se-sions. Joseph Bradley, a boy convicred of mdeoent assault, was allowed to go to a fa- in under certain restrictions, William Barker, convicted of theft of timber was sentenced to Dine months’ imprisonment ; three young men for assault with intent to rob were sentenced— John Black to nine months, Angus B ack l and Daniel Morris to 3 8 months, 1 Christohuroh. last night. The criminal sittings were opened today before Mr Justice Chapman. True bills were returned against Bruges and Goodman, solicitor and clerk, in respect of three charges of theft.
John Ross was acquitted on a charge of keeping a common gaming-house in Colombo street.
Dunedin, last night. Information has been received that John L’ndeay, egad 18 months, son of a farmer residing at Flag Swamp, was accidentally drowned in a creek on bis father’s land. -
Daring the week ended to day returns have been reported from 33 dredges, the total yield being 10450 z 6iwt 18grs, or an average of 3loz per dredge Nelson, last night. Word was reoeived this evening by telegraph that a young man, Henry Barren, i accidentally shot himself in the abdomen while goat hunting yesterday on the hills at the head of Riwaka Valley. Tbe party were carrying the man out over 10 miles of rough country, and had not arrived when the telegraph office closed. The man , ii suffering greatly.
Greymouth, last night. The coal exports for the week ending Sstutday were:—State mine, 3414 tons 14cwt; Tyneside, 1022 tons 6owt; Black* ball, 2076 tons 16owt; total, 6513 tons 16t!wt.
