(To the Editor Gisborne Times.-)’ Sir. —In your Monday’s report of the meeting of the Gisborne branch of tfie Farmers' Union, Sir Birrell preportpd have said, " Prior to Mr Carroll leaving Gisborne be (Mr Birrell) had arranged a meeting, and represented the matter of a rebate in the rent.” Now, Sir, being one of those who attended the said meeting, 1 have no recollection of Mr Birrell representing the matter to Mr Carroll, but I do - remember Mr Joyce bringing the matter up, and asking Mr Carroll to use his influenoa to allow all Crown tenants ■%, affeoted by tbe flood six months' rebate in their rent. Mr Carroll sympathised with tbe suggestion, but did not pledge himself ip get some remission. Mr Joyce also brought up th 9 matter of tbe Te Arai run beigg opened for settlement, to which Mr Carroll gave a satisfactory reply. Dir Joyce further stated that he did not believe in tbe publio subscribing to rebuild fenoes for landlords, but ha did believe in persons who lost pigs, fowls, etc , being paid for them. This would have been pieviously rip rted, only Mr Birroff gave the reporter to understand ho would not be reguired, that it was o-ffy a private meeting, wbioh naturally caused tbe reporter to retire.—l am, etc., ONE WRO WAS PRESENT.
