EAST COAST NEWS. PORT AWANUI. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) Mr and Mrs Harry Walker arrivod in Port Awanui on February Ist, when Mr and Mrs Walker, sour., gave a sumptuous supper and dance, which was kept up till the woe small hours. The bride looked charming in a pretty cream dress, trimmed with ribbon and lace. Beautiful weather and boats out gotting great hauls of fish, but when the steamer arrived, or just before, it started to blow, and consequently she wont by, leaving about eight passengers lamenting. A half-caste named Joe Riley, was up for stealing a' cheque, on Monday last, before Messrs Ludbrook and Jackson, J.P’s., and committed for trial. Accused was released on bail.

At a mooting of the race club the programme was ordered to lie printed, etc. Mr A. B. Jackson, of Port Awanui, consented to act as secretary for the ensuing year. Nominators are requested to forward all communications to the. secretary, Port Awanui. Mr Hamilton, of Rangatukia school, is leaving for Hokianga by tho first opportunity. TE ARAROA. (From our own Correspondent.) 'flux..old year finished off with fine warm weather, but it was not to last, and tho now year was welcomed with rain, and rain it did for the best part of tho month, the total fall being 16.49 inches for tho month, the worst week being from the 9th to loth with 12.40 inches, and the heaviest rain 13 inches on the 13th, causing a flood in some of tho streams quite as largo as the July floods.

Tho wet weather kept all shearing and bush burning back, and in consequence some have only just finished shearing tho big sheep. The weather cleared towards the end of the month, and everyone has finished up lamb shearing and bush burning. The burns have all been good in spite of the drenching they got. The weather has been bad for shipping and no wool was got away from tho port till last week, when the s.s. Haupiri and the schooner AY aiapn both managed to get off all the wool ready for shipment, tho former taking 166 bales and tho latter 150. During the month we had a visit from the Cooper and Wilson Company. They wore very unlucky in striking some of the worst weather, and coming overland, as they did, was not an easy matter, in any case, as they had to bring the cinematagrapli, etc., on pack-horses. Howover, they kept up their appointment, for which they deserve great credit, as to do so they had to take their gear down a flooded river in a boat. They played two nights, and were rewarded by good houses both nights, and it was nothing more than they deserved, as the entertainment was realty good, the pictures being splendid, and quite a revelation to the natives, who had never seen anything of tho sort before. Mrs and Miss Beattie, who had charge of tho native school in Te Araroa for a numbor of years, have left, having gone to Auckland, Mr Downey, formerly of Hick’s Bay, and latterly of Jerusalem, Waipiro Bay, being now in charge of the school. February 7tli.
