Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, Feb. 22. The wheat markets are quiet. Four large shipments to the Argentine are being discounted by the diminishing stock in Russia. Cargoes are firmly held and there is little inquiry. A Victorian and South Australian January and February shipment has sold at 30s 6d; New South Wales January shipment, 30s 9d; Australian, on spot, is firm at 335. Flour supplies are scarce, but the market is quiet, with South Australian at 24s and Victorian 24s 3d. ;•
On the batter market there is a slow trade in New Zealand at 98s to 100 s. Other sorts are unchanged. Prices have a downward tendency, anil the demand is not equal ,to the large supplies. There is a strong market for New Zealand cheese at 665.
An experimental shipment of eggs from New South Wales has proved a failure. On the Bradford wool market there is better inquiry and more business. Forty sixes 18d, other classes unchanged. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner dated London 23rd : The mutton market is depressed, and dull of sale for all qualities. The tendency of the market.seems to be to decline. Curfl rent quotations are Canterbury 41 d and 4d, and North Island 4fd and 3|d per lb for light and heavy weights respectively. The lamb market is weak. Stocks on hand are heavy and widelv distributed amongst agents, who are pushing sales. A further drop in price seems imminent. Australian lamb is of mixed quality. New Zealand is quoted at 5 5-Sd to 5d and Australian 43d to 4d per lb. The beef market is quiet, though there is a bettor demand for New Zealand hind quarters, winch are quoted 3gd, and fores 23 d per lb. The butter market is very depressed. A fair demand continues. Owing to reports concerning its dry season, and in anticipation of small supplies coming forward from New Zealand later on m the season, the market mav, however. improve. Choice Now Zealand butter ,s quoted at 995, Australian 9,s > Argentine 98s, and Danish 112 s per cwt. Tho cheese market is very linn. There is a general and active demand for New Zealand makes at 66s per cwt. Tho hemp market is quiet and little business is doing but a good feeling prevails. There has been a decline in price, owing to leavy arrivals. Good fair grade on spot is worth £3B and fair current Manila £4O. There is scarcely any demand for cocksfoot seed, and the market is q lU et at 40s per ewt for 1 , clean dressed seed.
