THE TUATEA.

RETURN FARE REDUCED. At tho meeting of the Harbor Hoard yesterday a letter was received which the Chrflirmiin asked tho Board to regard as private information, asking the press not to publish the •contents. Mr. Clark objected to the Board receiving private information at a Hoard meeting.’ If the letter wero read it became public proporty. It was decided to read the letter, and regard it as of a private nature, as there were one or two statements in the letter that a firm would not care to have published. The letter was from tho Union Company, who wrote agreeing to moot tho request from the Board to liave the return fare from steamers in the Bay reduced to Is, conditionally that the charge of 10s on the Tuatea was remitted.

Captain Tucker objected to the Board laying down terms to any company. It was completely outside their province, and ridiculous in tho extreme.

Mr: Lysnar suggested that a hanging board be placed on either side of the mast of the Tuatea, specifying the 'charge to be a shilling return to the town.

Mr Whinray said the company were simply agreeing to a suggestion made by the Board. They should pass the by-law, according to the terms of the letter. The Chairman said the idea of reducing the fare from vessels in the Bay was for the purpose of inducing passengers to visit tho town. After considerable discussion it was decided to remit the 10s on the Tuatea, on the terms of the Union Company’s letter, :.j.r. Clark and the Hon. Captain Tucker voting against the motion on the ground that the Board had no right to dictate terms' to a company.
