THE COOK MEMORIAL
“Citizen” writes as follows: —“By your Saturday’s issue I see that one of your correspondents who signs himself “Cookite” wishes to know why the Governor was not shown the so-called Cook Monument. Well, sir, although a Cookite, I am inclined to differ from him, as I consider it ono of the most judicious actions on tlio part of Mr Townloy not to bring the Governor round to find fault with that so-ealled monument, which Jiimself and Mr. Gaudin wore principally instrumental in disfiguring, for it would bo a discredit to Gishonio to try to induce the Governor to believe that such is the real Cook monument. It is to bo hoped when Mr. Townloy’s term of office expires the contingenters’ names will be chased from the structure, and tlio monumont bear the name only of the great navigator for whom it was originally intended. As for the Governor’s roception it could only be called private, in reality a private ontertainment, although Mr. Townley was pleased to call it a public function, having' had it in his own private house. It would therefore bo erroneous to term it public, as there were no public functions held in Gisborne, and tlio reception, taking it all round, was the most frail attempt at a reception, seeing that the public were as much interested in the Governor’s visit as thoso who made themselves so very conspicuous in the matter.”
