The waterworks contract is steadily proceeding and as soon as tho Waimata river crossing has been completed, a start will be made with a crossing near the footbridge.

Business at the Maori Land Board yesterday was confined to recommendations ro the settlement of Wairoa land. The Native Minister will consider a report.

Mrs. Howie (To Rangi I’ai) will give a- vocal recital at Gisborne on the 20th inst., prior to an Australian tour. Tho Club orchestra anil leading amateurs will assist, aud tho recital is bound to be very popular.

The proposed new church and manse for the Presbyterian Church will entail ah expenditure, comjilete, of £4,000. Information is being obtained as to the prospects of raising the sum within the next two years, o- as largo a proportion as would justify a commencement. The site available is at tho corner of Childers road and Cobdcn street.

The Into Dr. Alexander, of Dunedin, under liis will, bequeathed £1250 to the Governor of St. Helena for the benefit of the native-born iioor and necessitous inhabitants of that island. The legacy was given in recognition of the fact that St. Helena was his birthplace, and his family have been closely connected with it for a lengthy period. The new Salvation Army. Biorama Company will be passing through Gisborne on Saturday in the Victoria, and in response to a requisition from a number of friends the band of the company will land and render a selection of music. The Town Clerk has kindly granted the use of the rotunda in Read’s. Quay, and the band will play from 9.15 to 9.45 in the morning. The Biorama Company is to visit Gisborne later and give public performances.

There was a good attondanco at tho first lesson at tho Gisborno school, in ono class 40 out of 43 pupils being present. On Friday tho lessons will be commenced at Mangapupa. An application from tho Association in respect of the Kaiti school lias so far not been doalt with, pending a fullor meeting of tho committee.

An evidence .of tlio esteem in which tlm late Mr. Alex. McKenzie, ol Ormond, was held in tho district, was afforded by tho largo number who attended yesterday to pay their last sad tributo. All parts of tho district wore represented.—some forty proceeding from town by special tram—and many beautiful wreaths vvore sent by friends. Tho Rev. E. Walker conducted tho burial service. Lho pull-bearers were Messrs. G. Matthewson, F. Harris, M. Hall, C. Neonan and other old friends of the deceased. The attendance included tho Native Minister (Mr. Jas. Carroll), tho County Chairman (Hon. Captain Tucker), Hon. Wi Pore,-the Mayor of Gisborne (Mr. J. Townley), and members of the Borough and County. Councils.
